Upside, I drive a very small car (Fiat 500 Abarth) that can get ~35 mpg

Downside, I drive the F%$# out of that car, and average 28 mpg...

That price on the right side looks good.

It was fun up here in Maine, it spiked to something like $4.30.

At this time my mother was driving a ‘98 Dodge Dakota that barely eked out more than 20MPG on most days.

Time and time again, our economy has weathered it. I once read that the sweet spot (producers, consumers, taxes) is about $3/gallon. Most people can handle that with minor spending impact, yet drillers and refiners still benefit AND there is just enough pain to encourage alternative energy.

Europeans: as soon as we can eat dinner from out immaculately smooth and clean roads, we can start talking about your fuel prices. IMHO, you get great infrastructure for those taxes.

Ouch. I just filled up on 93 about 20 minutes ago and it was only $3.27/gal.

I drive a non-Abarth Fiat 500, and it really does vary a lot depending on your driving style. Also hills tend to murder my gas mileage.

Heh. I treat the accelerator as an on/off switch, so that could have something to do with it....

You could drive 2 of your cars to work and still get better fuel economy than me...I may have a problem

It’s only a problem if you let it be a problem...

Googled to see what I paid this morning, it was $3.90. I actually noticed it went further past $30 than I’m used to.

... maybe I should start paying attention to where I stop for gas.

My Miata is the real gas guzzler at my house. If I try, I can hit 25 mpg but there’s no fun in that. Usually I’m closer to 22.

I’m not complaining, all things considered. Still though, I find it interesting (yet logical) how the relative fluctuation in fuel price (after tax) is just not much of a factor here. Like the graph I posted here, if you use a Y-axis starting at $0 the price fluctuations seem utterly negligible.

Well, mine is a 94. So it’s got the pop-up headlights (not exactly aerodynamic) but it has the larger 1.8L engine. The gearing is setup for acceleration, so if I’m going 75 mph on the highway I’m around 4000 rpm. A 6th gear would be nice. Plus, it’s 24 years old.

Understood...I honestly haven’t heard anyone complain yet, but the news media seems to be obsessed with gas prices. I think what really happens is that younger people see and experience things they’ve never been through before (as adults) and it seems like something terrible.

I was an adult when 9/11 happened, I worked in banking during the great recession and changed jobs about every 2 years, my modest retirement funds lost half their value, our country went through multiple overseas wars, fuel has jumped from $1.50 to $4.50 and back, etc

On the plus side, we’ve recovered from most of that. On the downside, there’s Trump...

The taxes paid on fuel/vehicles (in the U.K. at least) aren’t for maintaining the roads, it goes into the general tax pot. Maintaining most roads is the responsibility of local councils, funded by council taxes on each property in the area.

They’ve basically got nothing below 4000 RPM, so you’re dealing with a decent amount of friction at those engine speeds.

28 mpg.... seems pretty good to me. I think I saw 20 mpg for a stretch on the highway in a construction zone after tooling along at 55 mph. Normally I’m in the teens, so 28 is Great. It’s all about perspective.
